A peer-to-peer infrastructure for resilient web services
This work is funded by GR/M78403 âSupporting Internet Computation in Arbitrary Geographical Locationsâ and GR/R51872 âReflective Application Framework for Distributed Architecturesâ, and by Nuffield Grant URB/01597/G âPeer-to-Peer Infrastructure for Autonomic Storage ArchitecturesâThis paper describes an infrastructure for the deployment and use of Web Services that are resilient to the failure of the nodes that host those services. The infrastructure presents a single interface that provides mechanisms for users to publish services and to find hosted services. The infrastructure supports the autonomic deployment of services and the brokerage of hosts on which services may be deployed. Once deployed, services are autonomically managed in a number of aspects including load balancing, availability, failure detection and recovery, and lifetime management. Services are published and deployed with associated metadata describing the service type. This same metadata may be used subsequently by interested parties to discover services. The infrastructure uses peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay technologies to abstract over the underlying network to deploy and locate instances of those services. It takes advantage of the P2P network to replicate directory services used to locate service instances (for using a service), Service Hosts (for deployment of services) and Autonomic Managers which manage the deployed services. The P2P overlay network is itself constructed using novel Web Services-based middleware and a variation of the Chord P2P protocol, which is self-managing.Postprin
Love, rights and solidarity: studying children's participation using Honneth's theory of recognition
Recent attempts to theorize childrenâs participation have drawn on a wide range of ideas, concepts and models from political and social theory. The aim of this article is to explore the specific usefulness of Honnethâs theory of a âstruggle for recognitionâ in thinking about this area of practice. The article identifies what is distinctive about Honnethâs theory of recognition, and how it differs from other theories of recognition. It then considers the relevance of Honnethâs conceptual framework to the social position of children, including those who may be involved in a variety of âparticipatoryâ activities.
It looks at how useful Honnethâs ideas are in direct engagement with young peopleâs praxis, drawing on ethnographic research with members of a children and young peopleâs forum. The article concludes by reflecting on the implications of this theoretical approach and the further questions which it opens up for theories of participation and of adultâchild relations more generally
Evolution of opinions on social networks in the presence of competing committed groups
Public opinion is often affected by the presence of committed groups of
individuals dedicated to competing points of view. Using a model of pairwise
social influence, we study how the presence of such groups within social
networks affects the outcome and the speed of evolution of the overall opinion
on the network. Earlier work indicated that a single committed group within a
dense social network can cause the entire network to quickly adopt the group's
opinion (in times scaling logarithmically with the network size), so long as
the committed group constitutes more than about 10% of the population (with the
findings being qualitatively similar for sparse networks as well). Here we
study the more general case of opinion evolution when two groups committed to
distinct, competing opinions and , and constituting fractions and
of the total population respectively, are present in the network. We show
for stylized social networks (including Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graphs and
Barab\'asi-Albert scale-free networks) that the phase diagram of this system in
parameter space consists of two regions, one where two stable
steady-states coexist, and the remaining where only a single stable
steady-state exists. These two regions are separated by two fold-bifurcation
(spinodal) lines which meet tangentially and terminate at a cusp (critical
point). We provide further insights to the phase diagram and to the nature of
the underlying phase transitions by investigating the model on infinite
(mean-field limit), finite complete graphs and finite sparse networks. For the
latter case, we also derive the scaling exponent associated with the
exponential growth of switching times as a function of the distance from the

Complex folding and misfolding effects of deer-specific amino acid substitutions in the ÎČ2-α2 loop of murine prion protein
The ÎČ2âα2 loop of PrPC is a key modulator of disease-associated prion protein misfolding. Amino acids that differentiate mouse (Ser169, Asn173) and deer (Asn169, Thr173) PrPC appear to confer dramatically different structural properties in this region and it has been suggested that amino acid sequences associated with structural rigidity of the loop also confer susceptibility to prion disease. Using mouse recombinant PrP, we show that mutating residue 173 from Asn to Thr alters protein stability and misfolding only subtly, whilst changing Ser to Asn at codon 169 causes instability in the protein, promotes oligomer formation and dramatically potentiates fibril formation. The doubly mutated protein exhibits more complex folding and misfolding behaviour than either single mutant, suggestive of differential effects of the ÎČ2âα2 loop sequence on both protein stability and on specific misfolding pathways. Molecular dynamics simulation of protein structure suggests a key role for the solvent accessibility of Tyr168 in promoting molecular interactions that may lead to prion protein misfolding. Thus, we conclude that ârigidityâ in the ÎČ2âα2 loop region of the normal conformer of PrP has less effect on misfolding than other sequence-related effects in this region
A comparison of customised and prefabricated insoles to reduce risk factors for neuropathic diabetic foot ulceration: a participant-blinded randomised controlled trial.
UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND: Neuropathic diabetic foot ulceration may be prevented if the mechanical stress transmitted to the plantar tissues is reduced. Insole therapy is one practical method commonly used to reduce plantar loads and ulceration risk. The type of insole best suited to achieve this is unknown. This trial compared custom-made functional insoles with prefabricated insoles to reduce risk factors for ulceration of neuropathic diabetic feet. METHOD: A participant-blinded randomised controlled trial recruited 119 neuropathic participants with diabetes who were randomly allocated to custom-made functional or prefabricated insoles. Data were collected at issue and six month follow-up using the F-scan in-shoe pressure measurement system. Primary outcomes were: peak pressure, forefoot pressure time integral, total contact area, forefoot rate of load, duration of load as a percentage of stance. Secondary outcomes were patient perceived foot health (Bristol Foot Score), quality of life (Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life). We also assessed cost of supply and fitting. Analysis was by intention-to-treat. RESULTS: There were no differences between insoles in peak pressure, or three of the other four kinetic measures. The custom-made functional insole was slightly more effective than the prefabricated insole in reducing forefoot pressure time integral at issue (27% vs. 22%), remained more effective at six month follow-up (30% vs. 24%, p=0.001), but was more expensive (UK ÂŁ656 vs. ÂŁ554, p<0.001). Full compliance (minimum wear 7 hours a day 7 days per week) was reported by 40% of participants and 76% of participants reported a minimum wear of 5 hours a day 5 days per week. There was no difference in patient perception between insoles. CONCLUSION: The custom-made insoles are more expensive than prefabricated insoles evaluated in this trial and no better in reducing peak pressure. We recommend that where clinically appropriate, the more cost effective prefabricated insole should be considered for use by patients with diabetes and neuropathy. A Proposal for a Three Detector Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Program in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam
A Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) physics program of three LAr-TPC detectors
located along the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab is presented. This
new SBN Program will deliver a rich and compelling physics opportunity,
including the ability to resolve a class of experimental anomalies in neutrino
physics and to perform the most sensitive search to date for sterile neutrinos
at the eV mass-scale through both appearance and disappearance oscillation
channels. Using data sets of 6.6e20 protons on target (P.O.T.) in the LAr1-ND
and ICARUS T600 detectors plus 13.2e20 P.O.T. in the MicroBooNE detector, we
estimate that a search for muon neutrino to electron neutrino appearance can be
performed with ~5 sigma sensitivity for the LSND allowed (99% C.L.) parameter
region. In this proposal for the SBN Program, we describe the physics analysis,
the conceptual design of the LAr1-ND detector, the design and refurbishment of
the T600 detector, the necessary infrastructure required to execute the
program, and a possible reconfiguration of the BNB target and horn system to

UWISH2 -- The UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2
We present the goals and preliminary results of an unbiased, near-infrared,
narrow-band imaging survey of the First Galactic Quadrant (10deg<l<65deg ;
-1.3deg<b<+1.3deg). This area includes most of the Giant Molecular Clouds and
massive star forming regions in the northern hemisphere. The survey is centred
on the 1-0S(1) ro-vibrational line of H2, a proven tracer of hot, dense
molecular gas in star-forming regions, around evolved stars, and in supernova
remnants. The observations complement existing and upcoming photometric surveys
(Spitzer-GLIMPSE, UKIDSS-GPS, JCMT-JPS, AKARI, Herschel Hi-GAL, etc.), though
we probe a dynamically active component of star formation not covered by these
broad-band surveys. Our narrow-band survey is currently more than 60% complete.
The median seeing in our images is 0.73arcsec. The images have a 5sigma
detection limit of point sources of K=18mag and the surface brightness limit is
10^-19Wm^-2arcsec^-2 when averaged over our typical seeing. Jets and outflows
from both low and high mass Young Stellar Objects are revealed, as are new
Planetary Nebulae and - via a comparison with earlier K-band observations
acquired as part of the UKIDSS GPS - numerous variable stars. With their
superior spatial resolution, the UWISH2 data also have the potential to reveal
the true nature of many of the Extended Green Objects found in the GLIMPSE

Elliptical Galaxies and Bulges of Disk Galaxies: Summary of Progress and Outstanding Issues
This is the summary chapter of a review book on galaxy bulges. Bulge
properties and formation histories are more varied than those of ellipticals. I
emphasize two advances: 1 - "Classical bulges" are observationally
indistinguishable from ellipticals, and like them, are thought to form by major
galaxy mergers. "Disky pseudobulges" are diskier and more actively star-forming
(except in S0s) than are ellipticals. Theys are products of the slow
("secular") evolution of galaxy disks: bars and other nonaxisymmetries move
disk gas toward the center, where it starbursts and builds relatively flat,
rapidly rotating components. This secular evolution is a new area of galaxy
evolution work that complements hierarchical clustering. 2 - Disks of
high-redshift galaxies are unstable to the formation of mass clumps that sink
to the center and merge - an alternative channel for the formation of classical
bulges. I review successes and unsolved problems in the formation of
bulges+ellipticals and their coevolution (or not) with supermassive black
holes. I present an observer's perspective on simulations of dark matter galaxy
formation including baryons. I review how our picture of the quenching of star
formation is becoming general and secure at redshifts z < 1. The biggest
challenge is to produce realistic bulges+ellipticals and disks that overlap
over a factor of 10**3 in mass but that differ from each other as observed over
that whole range. Second, how does hierarchical clustering make so many giant,
bulgeless galaxies in field but not cluster environments? I argue that we rely

Building capacity for evidence informed decision making in public health: a case study of organizational change
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Core competencies for public health in Canada require proficiency in evidence informed decision making (EIDM). However, decision makers often lack access to information, many workers lack knowledge and skills to conduct systematic literature reviews, and public health settings typically lack infrastructure to support EIDM activities. This research was conducted to explore and describe critical factors and dynamics in the early implementation of one public health unit's strategic initiative to develop capacity to make EIDM standard practice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This qualitative case study was conducted in one public health unit in Ontario, Canada between 2008 and 2010. In-depth information was gathered from two sets of semi-structured interviews and focus groups (n = 27) with 70 members of the health unit, and through a review of 137 documents. Thematic analysis was used to code the key informant and document data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The critical factors and dynamics for building EIDM capacity at an organizational level included: clear vision and strong leadership, workforce and skills development, ability to access research (library services), fiscal investments, acquisition and development of technological resources, a knowledge management strategy, effective communication, a receptive organizational culture, and a focus on change management.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>With leadership, planning, commitment and substantial investments, a public health department has made significant progress, within the first two years of a 10-year initiative, towards achieving its goal of becoming an evidence informed decision making organization.</p
